Beware Boiúna drops a medical mission into one of the most unforgiving places on Earth and then asks a harder question than who gets eaten first: who deserves to walk out alive? Directed by Mike P. Nelson and released in United States theaters on October 2, 2026, this creature feature unfolds along the Amazon River in Colombia, where a legendary serpent known as Boiúna guards the rainforest and decides who lives and who dies. Instead of treating its monster as a simple killing machine, the film builds a tense human drama around guilt, revenge, and a family torn apart years before the cameras start rolling. Jessica Rothe, Kiana Madeira, and Logan Marshall-Green lead a cast whose fates become tangled after an accidental death on a riverside dock, and that single moment of panic sets two groups of outsiders on a collision course while the jungle watches. Themes of exploitation, respect for the land, and the price of cowardice run through every scene. This breakdown walks through the entire story in order, from the opening attack at an illegal mining camp to the final choice that spares one survivor, and then weighs how well the film delivers its jungle terror.

ACT I: A Mining Camp, a Medical Boat, and the First Kill

The story begins in Colombia, along the Amazon River, where a tribe called the Yaguari closes in on an illegal mining camp. As the villagers force the miners out, a gigantic snake known as Boiúna rises from the water and attacks the men.

Elsewhere on the river, a medical boat named the R.R. Hermes makes its way toward a nearby village. Aboard are Allison, called Alli, played by Jessica Rothe, along with Callum, Miguel, Raul, and Lena, played by Kiana Madeira. Lena is searching for her brother Jorge, who was lost somewhere in the Amazon, and she believes he is still alive. Raul acts as a father figure to her.

After earning the trust of the villagers, the crew begins treating patients. Alli plays with local children until a boy's ball drifts into the river and he runs after it. Alli tries to stop him, and a local man steps in to bring the child back. Boiúna surges out of the water and snatches the man while Alli can only watch him disappear.

ACT I CONTINUED: A Dock and a Fatal Secret

Later, the crew stops at a bar, where Alli notices a large drawing of the serpent on the wall. Lena explains that Boiúna is a guardian of the rainforest who decides who lives and who dies. The same bar holds a group of profiteers led by Brennan Malloy, played by Logan Marshall-Green. The crew dislikes their business but leaves them alone. Brennan's brother Shawn, played by Jackson Bews, seems interested in Alli but appears too shy to speak to her.

Alli then goes to untie the profiteers' boat so it will drift away. Shawn catches her, completely drunk, and makes an unwelcome advance. Alli sees how intoxicated he is and refuses, but when he tries to take it further, Lena arrives to intervene, and Shawn punches her. Lena shoves him back, and he falls and smashes his face on the dock, which kills him. Alli panics and wants to confess, but Lena warns that Brennan's men would kill them both. They dump Shawn's body in the water, unaware that a local boy has watched everything.

ACT II: Brennan Gives Chase

The Hermes crew departs for another village. Brennan and his men soon find Shawn's corpse in the water, and Brennan tracks down the boy who saw what happened. Brennan contacts the Hermes crew and demands that Lena and Alli be brought back. The crew refuses, since they know the death was self-defense, although Alli admits that Shawn saw her untying the boat. Against the wishes of his own men, Brennan decides to pursue the crew on his boat.

Farther along the river, the women nearly dive into the water until a crocodile's corpse pops to the surface. Lena is startled and cuts her leg on part of the boat. Miguel and Raul inspect the carcass, which has apparently been regurgitated. Meanwhile, Lena tells Alli how her parents were brutally murdered when she and Jorge were children, after refusing to give up their land. The Yaguari protected the children, but Lena was separated from Jorge and has searched for him ever since.

ACT II CONTINUED: A Night of Slaughter

At night, the crew stops their boat somewhere dark. Brennan and his men finally catch up and hold the crew's men hostage. Then Boiúna emerges and snatches one of Brennan's men, and in the ensuing chaos, Callum is accidentally shot. Miguel is snatched and killed by the serpent as well. Alli, Lena, and Raul run back to the boat, but Raul is taken by the snake too. Boiúna then capsizes the vessel, throwing Alli and Lena into the water.

Both women make it to shore, but when Alli calls out for Lena, the sound alerts Boiúna, and Alli is eaten, leaving Lena alone.

THE CLIMAX: Truce, Mud, and Machinery

Lena finds Brennan, whose men have all been killed and eaten. She considers killing him, but instead forms a truce so that they can survive. Jorge and a companion from the Yaguari eventually find them. When Brennan suggests they kill the snake, Jorge refuses, because Boiúna is regarded as necessary to the land. Moments later, Jorge's friend is chomped by Boiúna, and the survivors are forced to run.

Lena gets separated from Jorge again and falls into a large mud pit. Brennan tries to pull her out, but when he cannot reach her, he runs away. Boiúna slithers past Lena without noticing her, which allows Lena to drag herself free. Meanwhile, Brennan runs until guilt over abandoning Lena and the deaths of Shawn and his men begins to hit him.

Lena ends up at a construction site, where Boiúna attacks. She hides inside a crane and uses it to try to lift the snake and stop her assault, but a piece of equipment is impaled into her leg, trapping her. Brennan returns carrying a chainsaw and partially slices into Boiúna, giving Lena the opening to fight back. Boiúna devours Brennan, but Lena manages to stab the snake in the side.

FINAL RESOLUTION: The Guardian Chooses

Jorge and the other Yaguari arrive just in time to watch Lena stare down the massive serpent. Boiúna ultimately decides to spare Lena and retreats. Lena and Jorge embrace, and she chooses to stay with the Yaguari. The film ends as Lena joins the tribe in infiltrating the same mining camp that opened the story.

CRITICAL REVIEW & ANALYSIS

Beware Boiúna works best when it treats the human story as the real engine of the horror. The accidental death on the dock is the hinge of the film: it turns Brennan from a background profiteer into a grieving pursuer, and it gives Lena and Alli a secret that poisons their trust in everyone around them. Because the monster arrives only after that conflict is lit, her attacks feel like a verdict on those choices rather than random violence. Early festival reviews praised exactly this approach, highlighting the withheld creature, the tension built from human threats, and the care given to the characters.

Structurally, the film also takes a bold swing by killing off Alli, a billed lead, well before the finale, which hands the story to Lena. The mythology is the other strength. Boiúna is framed as a guardian who judges rather than a beast who hunts, and Jorge's refusal to kill her gives the Yaguari a worldview that the outsiders never grasp. The final sequence supports that idea, with Brennan's late act of redemption ending in his death while Lena earns mercy by standing her ground.

Pacing moves in clear waves: a slow, character-driven first act, a pursuit that gradually tightens, and a relentless run of deaths through the night and the climax. The theme is simple and effective: the jungle punishes greed and cowardice, and respects defiance. For creature feature fans, it is a lean, mean-spirited, and thematically focused ride.
