Other Mommy (2026) opens with a statement of purpose rather than a scare: humans possess the one thing demons can never have, which is being alive, and it is the thing demons covet most. Everything that follows is built on that hunger. Directed by Rob Savage and adapted by Nathan Elston from Josh Malerman's novel Incidents Around the House, the supernatural horror film reached theaters on October 9, 2026, with James Wan producing and Jessica Chastain playing both a mother and the entity that wears her face. At the center is eight-year-old Bela, played by Arabella Olivia Clark, who lives in a home strained by her parents' troubled marriage. She is the only person who can see the sinister presence that steps out of her closet, and she calls it Other Mommy. The creature asks one patient, polite question again and again: can it go inside her heart? This spoiler-filled breakdown follows the film from the first nighttime visit to the final confrontation, explains the family secret at the story's core, and closes with a critical look at what works and what does not.
The film wastes no time on a slow build. There is no long stretch in which a family gradually senses that something is wrong, because the trouble is already inside the house from the start. Bela is the only member of her family who can see Other Mommy, a figure who looks uncannily like her own mother, Ursula, and who appears to roam only at night, in the dark. She emerges from Bela's closet, and her request never changes: she wants to go inside Bela's heart. Bela says no. That refusal becomes the quiet engine of the entire film, a small girl holding a line that the demon cannot cross without her consent.
The emotional soil matters here. Bela's parents are struggling, and she senses they are keeping something from her. Other Mommy preys on exactly that sadness.
The first major shift comes when the rules of the haunting break. One day Ursula appears at home in the middle of the day and cheerfully offers to make Bela lunch. Bela realizes almost immediately that the woman in the kitchen is not her mother at all, and she bolts. Her father, whom she calls Daddo, soon catches the smell of something burning and goes to the kitchen to investigate. There he finds Other Mommy hiding beneath a table, and the sight startles him so badly that he goes crashing through a window.
The sequence establishes that Other Mommy is no longer content to wait in the dark. For the first time, the adults have to face the possibility that their daughter's claims are not a child's invention.
Ursula's own first sighting of Other Mommy comes during the couple's anniversary party, with the house full of guests. The scene shows that she can imitate other people as well: at one point she takes the form of the babysitter. The family retreats to the house of Frank, Daddo's best friend.
Safety does not last. At Frank's place a second secret surfaces: Ursula is having an affair with him. Other Mommy appears at the worst possible moment. Bela tells the entity that she wants Frank to go away, and Other Mommy kills him in front of the entire family. It is a grim turning point that shows what Bela's words can set in motion.
The family tries a kids' play center as a brief escape, only to find that Other Mommy has followed them there. They next turn to Ursula's mother, Grandma Ruth, who lives in a beach mansion and brings in a team of ghost hunters. The investigators have never actually summoned a ghost, and they seem more fascinated by studying the demon than banishing it. A séance conjures Other Mommy, and she kills several of them. With help gone, the family decides to go home.
Back in the house, the story finally pays off the secret that has hovered over Bela from the start. Ursula comes clean to her daughter. Before she met Daddo, she had been married to another man. When she became pregnant, the baby was not Daddo's, though he chose to build a family with her anyway. Ursula also admits that she never wanted to be a mother. Bela's biological father, it turns out, is Ursula's ex-husband.
The confession reframes the haunting. Other Mommy has been feeding on Bela's unspoken sorrow, and now that sorrow has a name.
Overwhelmed with grief, Bela runs from her parents to her room and calls out to Other Mommy, telling her that she is finally ready to let her into her heart. It sounds like surrender. In the bathroom, the demon appears wearing Bela's own form and asks the real Bela for a hug. Then, for the last time, she asks whether she can enter Bela's heart.
Bela's answer is a trap. She had been tricking the demon, and instead of opening herself up, she tears Other Mommy apart.
The victory comes not from ghost-hunting gear or a séance but from Bela confronting her own grief. By accepting the truth about her family, she removes the sorrow Other Mommy had been exploiting, and the demon is pushed away for good. The family of three survives intact, although the film leaves a lingering sense that Bela will always carry some discomfort around her mother. It is a notably gentler outcome than the one in the novel Incidents Around the House, which ends with Bela agreeing to let the entity in, the demon taking over her body, and Bela left alone in a vast, empty void. In the film, a child's refusal to give in is what saves her.
Other Mommy is at its best when it treats the haunting as a family drama in disguise. Starting with the threat already inside the house gives the film urgency, and its central idea, a demon that cannot simply take what it wants and must win a child's consent, is a strong engine for escalating dread. Jessica Chastain's dual performance is the film's most unsettling asset, because the audience is never entirely sure which version of her is on screen, and Arabella Olivia Clark has earned praise for holding the center as Bela.
Where the film struggles is in the supporting machinery. Early reviews point out that the stretch involving paranormal investigators and a supernatural-leaning grandmother echoes Insidious, and that the writing around Bela sometimes leaves her oddly unafraid of an entity that is killing people nearby. The affair subplot and the parentage reveal supply emotional weight but arrive in a fairly conventional order, and at least one critic feels the jump scares crowd out real dread. The ending, with a child defeating the demon by facing the truth about her family, is thematically tidy and arguably safer than the novel's bleak finale. Running about 93 minutes, the film moves briskly, and its central metaphor, that grief and family secrets give monsters their foothold, is clear and effective even when the execution leans on familiar beats. Viewers who like supernatural horror built around family trauma will find enough here to justify the ticket.
