Few studios can turn a muddy farmyard into a stage for pure visual comedy the way Aardman Animations can. Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom proves the magic is still intact. Released in the United States on September 18, 2026, through GKIDS, this 81-minute stop-motion comedy horror comes from directors Steve Cox and Matthew Walker and writers Mark Burton and Giles Pilbrow. It trades the alien chaos of Farmageddon for something shaggier: a Halloween creature feature set in and around Mossy Bottom Farm.

The film follows Shaun, the cleverest and most mischievous sheep in the flock, as a well-meaning science experiment spirals into a full-blown monster panic. Like the earlier Shaun adventures, it is almost entirely dialogue-free. Grunts, bleats, mutters and meticulous physical comedy carry every emotion. Justin Fletcher returns as Shaun and Timmy, John Sparkes voices both the Farmer and the loyal sheepdog Bitzer, and Nina Sosanya joins the cast as a new character, the village vet. Expect classic monster-movie homage, genuine warmth, and slapstick built with painstaking care.

Act I: Halloween Eve at Mossy Bottom Farm

The story opens a few days before Halloween, with Mossy Bottom Farm buzzing about the Halloween Hoedown. Shaun proudly pins up a drawing of a pumpkin made by his small cousin Timmy. The picture captures what the flock cares about most: their secret pumpkin patch, lovingly grown so they can carve jack-o'-lanterns for the big night.

The Farmer has his own mind on the festivities. He has a hopeless crush on the new vet in the nearby town of Mossingham, a calm, capable woman whose clinic keeps turning up strange objects inside her patients. The Farmer longs to impress her, but his clumsiness is a constant obstacle.

Then disaster strikes. A tangled chain of pratfalls involving the Farmer, a stubborn goat and an expandable laundry line flattens the flock's cherished pumpkin patch. Shaun watches the squashed remains with heartbreak. With Halloween only days away, he decides to fix the problem himself.

Act II, Part One: The Mad Scientist Sheep

Shaun finds a discarded science book and, with the confidence only a sheep with no formal training could muster, turns the barn into a laboratory. Bubbling beakers and glowing liquids fill the screen as he mixes a quick-grow formula meant to regrow the pumpkins overnight. It works almost too well. The vegetables return, but they refuse to stop growing, swelling into giants that threaten to overrun the farm.

The trouble multiplies when the leftover formula ends up beside a nearly empty bottle of hair-growth lotion. Through an innocent mix-up, the bottle lands in the paws of Bitzer, who delivers it to his hair-challenged master. The Farmer, still hoping to win over the vet, rubs it on his head. At first the results look promising. Then hair sprouts in all the wrong places, and soon thick, matted orange fur covers him from head to toe, turning him into something resembling Bigfoot.

Act II, Part Two: A Beast Loose in Mossingham

The transformed Farmer wanders into Mossingham, entirely unaware of how he looks. The townspeople scream and scatter, then give chase with growing fury. The terrified Farmer flees into the woods while Bitzer searches desperately for his missing master, with no idea that the monster everyone fears is the man he is hunting.

The vet becomes convinced the creature is a genuine Bigfoot. Shaun, meanwhile, grasps his own part in the catastrophe. He wavers between hiding his mistake and facing it, then chooses to own up as best a sheep can. He rallies the flock to brew an antidote while the farm's pumpkins keep ballooning around them.

Act III: The Ship to Bigfoot Island

The vet resolves to capture the beast and send it home to Bigfoot Island aboard a waiting ship. The Farmer ends up crated for the journey. Shaun, the flock and Bitzer race to the docks and use a crane to pull down a crate they believe holds him. The lid opens to reveal a crate full of fluffy toys. The real Farmer is still on board, and the ship is already sailing away.

Then comes the turning point. Using a sample from the creature, the vet runs a DNA test and discovers the truth: the beast is the Farmer. Her mission flips from capture to rescue, and she joins Shaun's crusade. The chase turns into a frantic pursuit of the departing vessel, and Shaun successfully rescues his owner.

The Climax: The Pumpkin Showdown

The danger is not over. Back at Mossy Bottom, the villagers have gathered with Halloween-prop pitchforks and scythes, ready to hunt the beast. The flock has to protect the Farmer without revealing who he is, and the answer is a typically ridiculous Aardman scheme. Bitzer and Timmy build an overgrown carved pumpkin and pair it with a car to stage the illusion that the Beast has been swallowed whole.

While the crowd reacts, Shaun sprays the antidote into the mouth of the pumpkin. The fur melts away and the Farmer returns to his usual self, just as the mob decides the monster is gone for good.

Resolution: A Happier Halloween

Nobody in Mossingham learns what really happened, and the flock celebrates quietly. Seeing the Farmer restored, the vet joins him in the spirit of the evening, and he finally works up the nerve to ask her to a local dance. The romance is the film's gentlest payoff. In a mid-credits sting, a crow drinks the leftover growth potion from a bin, hinting that the trouble may not be finished. The closing credits also show a sheep soaring on a flying broom, a last visual joke.

Critical Review & Analysis

The Beast of Mossy Bottom maintains Aardman's high standard without reinventing the formula. Its pacing is brisk. At 81 minutes, it builds one escalating set piece after another and never lingers long enough to wear out its welcome. Critics have praised its energetic slapstick, and the film holds a 98 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 80 on Metacritic.

The craftsmanship is the main attraction. Charles Copping's cinematography gives the farm a warm, tactile glow that suits both the cozy and the creepy moments, and the hand-built sets reward close attention. Natalie Holt's score, her first for an animated feature, balances playful mischief with gentle monster-movie menace.

Character development is simple but effective. Shaun's arc, from confident problem-solver to a sheep who accepts responsibility for his mistake, gives the story real emotional weight. Fletcher and Sparkes do wonders with wordless vocal performance, and Sosanya's vet is a welcome human presence who stays grounded even when the plot gets absurd. The main criticism is that a film called The Beast of Mossy Bottom could have been stranger and scarier, since the horror tone stays gentle. For families, though, that restraint is a feature. The film's themes of honesty, loyalty and teamwork land softly but clearly, making it an easy recommendation for Halloween viewing.
