After a seven-year absence from the big screen, the galaxy far, far away makes its triumphant theatrical return with Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau. Picking up where The Mandalorian Season 3 left off, the film follows bounty hunter Din Djarin and his small green companion Grogu as they navigate a fragile New Republic still cleaning up the wreckage of the Empire's fall. Along the way, they cross paths with New Republic officer Colonel Ward, a mysterious Imperial fugitive, and members of the notorious Hutt crime family. At its heart, the movie explores loyalty, found family, and the cost of keeping promises in a lawless galaxy — themes longtime fans of the "Clan of Two" will find deeply familiar, even as the story pushes both characters into darker, more personal territory than ever before. What follows is a complete, spoiler-filled, start-to-finish breakdown of the film's plot.
The film opens with sweeping shots of X-wings and New Republic personnel bustling around Adelphi Base, the same outpost introduced in The Mandalorian Season 3. Din Djarin arrives with his old ally Zeb and young Grogu, walking into the base's cantina where Colonel Ward, the officer running Adelphi's starfighter operations, greets them with a wry "Messy," referring to the state of Djarin's latest bounty. Djarin now works as an independent contractor hunting Imperial war criminals for the New Republic, and Ward makes clear their goal isn't revenge, but preventing another galactic war. Ward is disappointed the fugitive wasn't captured alive for questioning, though Djarin shows little concern for such details as long as he gets paid.
Ward then presents a far more lucrative job: the New Republic has been hunting a shadowy Imperial mastermind it cannot identify, and the Hutt Twins — vicious gangsters who inherited their late cousin Jabba's criminal empire — claim to have information about him. In exchange, they want Djarin to track down and retrieve their nephew, Rotta the Hutt, who has gone missing. Ward explains the arrangement clearly: Djarin will retrieve Rotta for the Twins, and in return, the Twins will hand over intelligence on the elusive Commander Coin. Though reluctant to work with gangsters again, Djarin accepts once he learns the size of the payout, and the team departs Adelphi aboard a brand-new Razor Crest.
The search leads Djarin, Grogu, and Zeb to Shakari, a rain-soaked, neon-drenched cyberpunk city that serves as one of the film's standout new settings. There, they discover that Rotta is being held captive by an Imperial warlord running an underground fighting ring. Rather than the spoiled, greedy Hutt fans might expect, Rotta turns out to be a surprisingly decent and complex character, nothing like the typical Hutt stereotype. Djarin and Grogu learn the fighter-ring boss holding Rotta, known as Lord Janu, is secretly one and the same person as the wanted Imperial fugitive Commander Coin.
Realizing the Twins never intended to let Rotta live — planning instead to have him killed in a rigged gladiator match despite promising his freedom — Djarin makes a pivotal choice. Rather than honor his contract with the Twins, he decides to capture Janu/Coin himself and help Rotta go into hiding, effectively double-crossing the Hutts. The decision triggers a chaotic escape: stormtroopers pursue the group in a landspeeder that crashes onto the Razor Crest's loading ramp, forcing Zeb and Rotta to fight them off in close combat while Djarin pilots the ship out. Coin's Imperial remnant forces then scramble three starfighters, leading to a tense aerial chase above Shakari, which Djarin wins by shooting down all three pursuers before jumping to hyperspace.
Back at Adelphi Base, Djarin and Grogu hand the captured Janus Coin over to Colonel Ward, while Rotta waits safely aboard the ship. With the mission seemingly complete, Djarin and Grogu believe their work is finished and head home to Nevarro — but Ward has already warned that the Hutt Twins would seek revenge for being denied their nephew.
That warning proves prophetic. The bounty hunter Embo, dispatched by the Twins, ambushes and kidnaps Djarin, delivering him to the Hutts' stronghold on Nal Hutta. There, in one of the film's most significant moments, the Twins forcibly remove Djarin's helmet as punishment for refusing to hand over Rotta — marking the first time his face has been shown on screen since 2020. He is then thrown into a pit beneath their throne room, echoing Jabba's infamous rancor pit, forced to fight for his life against a monstrous Dragonsnake.
Grogu, aided by a group of resourceful, diminutive Anzellans, sneaks into the Hutt compound to save his adoptive father. Though the rescue succeeds, Djarin is bitten by the Dragonsnake during the escape and poisoned. Unable to fit aboard the Anzellans' tiny getaway ship, Djarin chooses to stay behind, covering the group's escape as the venom spreads through his body.
Grogu refuses to abandon him, staying behind to find the badly wounded Mandalorian in the swamps of Nal Hutta. Through the night, Grogu nurses Djarin and searches for a cure, marking a powerful reversal of their usual dynamic — for once, it's Grogu protecting Din rather than the other way around. When Djarin finally awakens and recovers, the pair decides against fleeing the planet, reasoning that the Twins will simply hunt them forever if they don't finish the fight now.
Djarin and Grogu launch an assault on the Twins' palace, tearing through their droid security forces. Using Rotta's abandoned ship to breach the compound, Djarin squares off against Embo while Grogu works to free Rotta from captivity. Rotta then turns on his own aunt and uncle, battling the Twins directly, and in the chaos all three Hutts tumble toward the same Dragonsnake pit that nearly killed Djarin earlier. The Twins ultimately meet a gruesome end, devoured by the very creature they once used as a weapon, while their droid army is wiped out in the ensuing destruction. Rotta nearly falls into the pit alongside them, but Grogu uses the Force to pull him to safety at the last moment.
With the Twins destroyed, the heroes aren't in the clear yet — the remaining Droid Gotra security forces still stand between them and escape. Thanks to word relayed by the Anzellans, Colonel Ward leads a New Republic strike force to the rescue, laying waste to the Hutt fortress. Djarin calls in an airstrike on the main compound, and the New Republic's Adelphi Squadron finishes off what remains of the Hutts' operation, allowing the group to escape safely.
Djarin, Grogu, and Rotta return safely to Adelphi Base. Ward reveals that questioning of the captured Coin confirmed the Hutts had been playing both sides all along — vindicating Djarin's instinct not to fully trust them from the start. Rather than vanish into hiding, Rotta chooses to remain at Adelphi Base and formally join the New Republic, parting ways with Djarin and Grogu on good terms. The film closes on a warm, character-driven note as Djarin lets Grogu take the controls of their newly repaired Razor Crest, guiding the ship into hyperspace together.
