Roberto has adapted by becoming sharp-elbowed and self-serving. He smuggles goods for Viktor Pritchenko, the pilot from the first film, who has grown influential on the islands and is now looking after Lúculo. During one job, Roberto loots jewelry from a survivor couple's yacht and is attacked by their infected son, and the blame lands on Tae, a Spanish-Korean conscript who is routinely bullied. When Roberto later steps in to defend Tae, the fight leaves a sergeant in the hospital and Roberto in military custody.
Pritchenko offers him a way out: instead of military prison, Roberto can join Operation Ithaca, a last-ditch expedition to the mainland for resources. The catch, known only to them, is that Roberto must also bring back medication, including anti-anxiety drugs Pritchenko wants to trade. The team includes the seasoned Captain Castro, played by Mónica López, and Marina, played by Julia Martínez, who once trained Roberto and has no faith in him. Marina is also privately desperate for news of her twin sister, Herminia.
The task force lands at the Cuatro Vientos airfield in Madrid, where the government abandoned most of its resources before evacuating. Hordes of infected are waiting. The battle for the airfield is long and costly, the soldiers run dangerously low on ammunition, and many of them are killed. When the group is nearly boxed in, Roberto finds a way out across the roof, and Commander De Luna, played by Mario Mayo, stays behind in a final stand so the others can escape. Later, Roberto panics and fires at an infected, drawing anger from the squad, but Marina surprisingly takes his side.
With the stores secured, Roberto quietly stashes drugs for his deal, and Lucía, the nurse from the first film, learns of the arrangement but agrees not to report him. The team's tech specialist, Core, played by Santiago Vaca Narvaja, finds a working chat network, but the replies from a user called Elias turn out to be automatic.
Marina finally gets into her email and learns that Herminia is dead. Roberto, who has opened up to her about the weight of his father's crimes, suggests they honor the people they have lost by releasing sky lanterns into the night. Other soldiers join in, and the lights drift over the dead city. Someone sees them. Survivors hiding inside a bullring make radio contact, and the military intercepts the transmission.
Command orders the team to keep to its supply schedule and attempt no rescue. Marina pushes back, but Castro cannot change course without her superiors' approval.
Then González Escalona arrives, now acting president after rousing survivors on the islands into revolt, bringing troops along with Pritchenko and Tae. He approves Marina's request for a volunteer rescue team, and he has plans for Roberto too. Escalona reveals that Enrique once worked for him, promises to clear the Román family name, and offers to take Roberto to old contacts who may know where his father is. Roberto, already thinking about leaving the army, agrees to travel with him as an aide.
Marina volunteers for the rescue even though she knows it could be a suicide mission, and Roberto cannot talk her out of it. Everyone boards Pritchenko's helicopter, with Lucía climbing aboard at the last second, and her conversation with Pritchenko reveals that Manel, the hero of the first film, did not survive. When the soldiers drop at the bullring, Roberto, dressed as a civilian, seems set to continue with Escalona. Then he looks at Lúculo, and something shifts. He climbs out and joins the team, to Marina's obvious relief.
The plan is to draw the infected away from the trapped survivors, partly with a remote-controlled drone carrying a music player. Several soldiers fall, Marina is forced to mercy-kill a comrade who is being eaten alive, and another soldier takes his own life after being bitten. Roberto turns himself into bait, luring part of the horde into the tunnels to thin it out and cut it off. Soon he and Marina are out of ammunition and cornered, fighting with improvised blades. At the last moment, Pritchenko's helicopter returns with Tae on a heavy machine gun, and the horde is wiped out.
With the bullring secured, the survivors and soldiers choose to hold it instead of treating it as a quick extraction. Captain Castro goes on the radio and declares the arena an infection-free safe zone, inviting anyone still alive to come for shelter and a way back to the Canary Islands. Roberto, Marina and the remaining soldiers grieve the friends they lost but find a reason to keep fighting. Roberto never reaches his father, and what Escalona knows and what he really wants stay unanswered, leaving the political threat hanging over whatever comes next.
New World is a deliberate change of shape for the franchise. Where the first film lived inside one grieving man's head, this one is a military ensemble piece, and Torrens clearly enjoys the larger canvas. The Cuatro Vientos assault is the standout, a sustained and chaotic set piece that uses Roberto's inexperience to keep the danger close, and the bullring finale delivers gore and momentum within a lean running time of roughly an hour and a half.
The trade-off is intimacy. Roberto is a harder sell than Manel, a protagonist who spends most of the film serving himself, and his turn toward selflessness depends on a bond with Marina that develops very quickly. Escalona is the film's most interesting idea, a populist who feeds on fear and resentment of outsiders, but his interest in Roberto is never fully explained, and the political maneuvering sometimes slows the action instead of sharpening it. Reviews have reflected that split, with some praising the speed and suspense and others calling it bigger but less memorable than its predecessor.
What stays with you is the film's argument that a refuge built on fear eventually stops being worth defending. Roberto's final choice and Castro's broadcast recast survival as something people do for one another rather than at one another's expense. It is not as haunting as the original, but it gives the saga a hopeful foothold and a political villain worth watching in the next chapter.
